So he is 35 ft from the summit. GREAT analogy!
Well, you got me there, for sure. I was off slightly in my knowledge of Everest's height, wasn't I? The never-wrong Wikipedia says it's 29,029 ft above sea level, or was.
I can't cure you of your analogy scoffing, but I'm happy to revise my statement to say that Drew Hunter is well above 27,999 feet in his quest to reach the summit. I'd say his accomplishments to date put him at that lofty height - but those last 1,029 feet have defeated more than a few elite climbers, so there are no givens here. Nevertheless, may Drew Hunter go where no American has gone before. Where no non-PED-tainted human has gone before. Beyond where any PED-tainted human has gone before.
For comparison to a more current runner than Pre, what were Centro's numbers at around the same age (21)? I chose Centro because, after all, only three Americans have broken 3:37 as teenagers: Hunter, Centro, and Jim Ryun. Ryun's records are incomparable, but maybe Centro's age 21 (give or take) accomplishments can be useful here to gauge Hunter's relative progression.
