I'm thinking of a trip to Japan in the next couple of years and would love to combine it with one of these "proper" Japanese marathons.
Anyone have any experience of entering/running these races or recommendations or any other takes on them??

I though Fukuoka was reserved for those w some pretty sharp times
I think it’s 2:26 or 2:28 required for Fukuoka. Can you qualify?
If not, it’s Biwa. Yet Japan has many good marathons, so don’t limit yourself to the two you mentioned.

No that's lake Biwa. Fukuoka is around 2:40 iirc.

Following. I'm interested in doing one of these as well. I've hit the qualifying times for both- just wanting to know which one would be easier logistically for an American as well as which one might be more conducive to enjoying my Japan experience!
Both have the same essential logistical hurdle: the flights across the Pacific and jetlag. Plus travel from Tokyo or Osaka to either race location. Lake Biwa is in Otsu near Kyoto, which is a fantastic destination as an international tourist. Fukuoka a bit less so.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
