I hear it was announced at the USATF meeting that in 2020 the olympic committee and IAAF will be using the world rankings to decide the qualifiers. Does this mean the 'Olympic Trials' aren't really the olympic trials anymore? Is it more of a last-chance meet to improve world ranking?
I'm not a fan of this, a few reasons why.
It makes the 'Olympic Trials' mostly pointless
You don't really know who qualifies for the world championships/olympics until they make the announcement near the start of the olympics or world championships
You won't have any of the new up-and-coming athletes making their way into the meet. Imagine a collegiate athlete trending upwards, running 1:47 in ncaa regular season, then runs 1:46 at NCAA championships, then runs 1:44.6 to win the old Olympic Trials, but doesn't get in because there are a few other guys that had 1:43 in the previous August or placed well with a 1:45.1 at some early-season diamond league race.
And if they aren't placing top 3 at our US Championships, what makes us think they'll be better in a month or two (or 6 months for marathon) at the olympics?
