So a guy at work claimed he is related to a former Olympic runner:
-Last name "Richards"
-Competed in a running event during the 1920s
Without more, I was unable to locate any such runner. Any research experts have any idea who this person may be?

My best guess:::
Alma Wilford Richards (February 20, 1890 – April 3, 1963) was an American athlete. He was the first resident of Utah to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games, in 1912, in the running high jump event.
