I have a history of metatarsal stress fx/reaction that has hampered my training goals. For years, I've run only in soft, highly cushioned shoes -- think Brooks Glycerins and similar -- based on the idea that more cushion = softer landing = less stress on the bones.
However, I wonder if this is counterproductive. For tibial stress fx, there's research suggesting that muscle around the bone is protective (bigger calves = stronger shin bones). By analogy, maybe there's a similar relationship between the foot muscles and the metatarsal bones. An overly cushy shoe generates less feedback from the road, thus less engagement of the foot muscles, thus weaker foot muscles. Which in turn could make a runner more prone to metatarsal stress fx/reax.
What do you think about this idea? Am I on the right track or is it horseshit? Any personal experience to share?
I'm not interested in minimalist shoes, but I am thinking about trying out shoes with a firmer ride to see if they will help me.
