Hey. My daughter is getting ready to apply to colleges. Could contacting a coach at a D3 school help my daughter get in if she is on the border as to whether she gets in? Obviously this is a thing at D1 schools but how about D3?
Thanks.....D3Girl

There are other good threads on this. Division 3 schools don't offer athletic scholarships, but a coach can still invite you for a recruiting visit and/or recommend an admissions decision if you will be on the team. At the very least, if your daughter wants to run XC/track in college, she will want to contact the coach about walking-on the team when she is admitted to the school. Some D3 schools are very competitive and will have try-outs or walk-on standards, but most are more like a high school team. If this experience is important to your daughter, then she will want to know that she be on the team before she makes a decision to attend. Look at the websites of the teams at the schools she is interested in about recruiting information, and if there is none, then there will be contact information for the. If you have trouble reaching the coach, then contact the admissions office. Be willing to pay for your own campus visit if you are serious about attending, and try to make an appointment with the coach (or speak on the phone at least) when you visit campus. Ideally you'll want to meet someone who's currently on the team about their experience as a student athlete. Good luck.
It probably varies by school, but based on my experiences it can absolutely help. I ran for an academically competitive D3 school in the Northeast, and our coach had a couple admissions "slots" he could use each year for kids on the bubble. Usually these slots were reserved for kids who committed to apply early decision. One year he was able to get two guys off the wait list.
Whether this scenario would work for your daughter will depend partly on her ability relative to the other girls being recruited, but the coach should be able to give you a concrete idea of your daughter's chances if she's committed to attending. It definitely won't hurt to reach out. Good luck. Show your daughter as many schools as you can. Don't get tunnel vision. Lots of exciting options out there.
I'm a freshman and run for a pretty competitive school both academically and in terms of running. Our coach has been here for a while, so he has a lot of pull with the admissions department. From what I've heard from all the coaches I talked to last year while I was looking at schools, they can "support your application" (i.e. help tip you in to the accepted pool if you're on the brink of being waitlisted or rejected). Typically they push you to go ED or EA if they're gonna do this tho.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
