Flop x 2...waste of money until he does something of note again.
I think this means that he is not in shape.
Calling it now, he breaks the world record.
Good call !
He's done.
This is old news, was already announced several weeks ago.
He dropped out of Berlin last year yes, but In my opinion you can never count Bekele out. Amsterdam probably offered him a lot of money--hope it will be worth it.
Nice choice in my opinion. The course is probably very flat and fast. Not that much pressure either.
It’s so funny how some people on letsrun almost have joy over elites decline or hardships. Is it because they are lacking the talent and are just plain jealous? Bekele has had a wonderful career. One of the greats and he should have no regrets. I wish I had 1/8 of the talent he has.
This is off the subject (BTW, best of luck to Bekele - suggestion, just run a good marathon and don't bonk trying to break the world record), but what happened to the Rotterdam Marathon? It used to be a world record course with great competition, but I don't hear about it anymore. No dollars for top tier athletes?
NY denied his entry
You literally know nothing about this, and should realize that is not an indicator of the situation.
This gives Bekele the opportunity to get MORE appearance money (which he is, it was was stated he got very little from Berlin by his manager post Berlin last year.)
More importantly, he will have less pressure, get to be the big name and have less top competition FORCING him to go out a blistering pace that is not in his best interest.
This does not mean he is in bad shape, he could easily be in great shape and have two pacers dedicated to a negative split type set up for him. He may want to go out in 61:45 instead of 61:15.
+1
I am disappointed that so many people seem happy to call him washed up. He ran the second fastest marathon of all time on limited training after five years of injury. He is the word record holder in the 5000 and 10,000. Where is the respect? Where is the empathy? I think almost everyone else would have quit by now had they gone through his injuries. Bekele is a fighter.....A warrior....A winner....A fierce competitor! No one who posts here on this website understands what it takes to do what he has done. Good luck Mr. Bekele in Amsterdam, and let God's grace be with you on race day!!!!!
At least he is still trying.
Pfft. . . . All these east Africans are plebs. I could win any of these marathons, I regularly do sub 2 hour marathons on my 50 mile recovery runs

Well, this is the type of scenario I would hope for. Cherono ran 2:05:09 in Amsterdam last year but Bekele beat him in London (I think). So, Bekele can run a fast time while having a company in later stages that could push him.
He's the GOAT.
So it pains me to change the usual expectations... but...
Expect mediocre things.

Maybe Nike doesn't want its athletes to run there? Winning times are still not bad there but the biggest names choose Boston or London. Kipchoge, Makau, Kipsang etc. have won in Rotterdam before but now the hype is more around the London marathon. The atmosphere is special in Rotterdam. I've run there and everybody was along the course supporting the runners. It must be something like one million people following the race.

He can keep monetizing his legendary career forever but he's done nonethless.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
