I'm a senior in high school planning on running in college. Probably best at Mid-D. This summer I've been meeting coaches and visiting schools, but am unsure about a few things about the whole recruitment process. For the record, the schools I've been considering are all Ivy Leagues, other "top 20 "schools, and strong publics. I'll list them at the end of this post. I'm as strong a student as I am a runner, won't get into numbers if I don't need to, but even without running I stand as a good of a chance as anyone of getting into a top school.
Some things confuse me about the process. When I've meet coaches, it has been after I email them about my running career, my academic credentials, and when I'll be visiting their school. I've meet abouts six coaches in person, talked on the phone with a couple more, and had one school not get back to me at all. Every coach I've talked to seems knowledgeable and confident in their team. Talking to them hasn't really helped narrow anything down, although there was one program that didn't strike me as a great fit. Still liked the coach though. Anything I should look out for in a coach/program? Some of the schools I'm considering have been called out on here for being persistent underperformers. The coaches basically tend to get mixed reviews on here, as far as I can tell, except maybe two that I've read nothing but good things about (although they're probably not the two with the most successful programs).
One thing that interests me is that I've had some coaches basically tell me that my times are not too exciting, or maybe not in their target recruiting range... but according to TFFRS they'll only have a couple guys running faster than I already have as a junior in HS (who missed most of spring track due to injury).... what gives? It's not as if I couldn't contribute to these teams. And if their 2018 recruiting classes are representative, I am certainly not out of place at those schools. One the other hand, almost every coach has taken the time to speak with me for a while. How should I interpret that in terms of a school's interest? Also, despite meeting so many coaches, only two schools have followed up with me about wanting me to come for an official visit. Is that something to be concerned about?
Finally, I'd say my biggest fear is going off to college and... sucking. So many talented HS runners from my area have gone on to run slower in college at some of the schools I'm considering, even schools with coaches that letsrun has high opinions of. Is that concerning, or are those cases more the fault of the athlete themselves losing interest/drinking too much?
If anyone has particular insight to the following schools and their coaches feel free to share that too:
