No, it`s not. The key is more in how you run your miles. Not how many miles you run.

1a. Having a living situation (no big distractions, being able to cover living expenses, etc.) where you can afford to spend 2 hours a day running and still be able to recover properly.
If you are trying to squeeze 2 hours a day around a stressful 9-5, family life, etc, "full potential" isn't happening. Obviously that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

That`s of course to simplify how he trained, and of course he didn`t do it every day and week. As someone described before, he ran a lot of hilly routs and so on. And I`m sure that if I had coached him back then with what I know today, he had been at least as good on less time training.

To get that last 0.1% add one more hour, be like Ed.
The key is more like building your training week with the three most important factors for the result, maxVO2, threshold and
aerob ability . In fact there is also a fourth factor that is most important, proper recovery, but many seldom think of it as being a very important factor to mention.
