Are 1:55/2:20 & 4:30/5:05 still the targets for HS boys/girls?
Pretty much what the average leg of the HS 4x 800/4x mile relay records would be.

1:55 is pretty quick.
I think a lot more girls get 2:20 than boys get 1:55. And twice as many boys get 4:30 than 1:55.
I know you are looking for nice round numbers, and 2:00 is too slow. But I'd say 1:57 or even 1:58 is more equivalent.
whats a benchmark time? do you mean like, what makes you solid? good? great? elite?
Mile:
Solid - 4:30-4:40 - Everyone ran 4:30 in HS
Good - 4:20-4:29
Great: 4:10-4:10
Elite: Sub 4:10
800:
Solid - 2:00-2:02
Good - 1:56-1:59
Great 1:52-1:55
Elite: Sub 1:52
Coincidentally, the average for the HSR for the 4x800 and 4x1600 are roughly 1:52 (7:28) and 4:10 (16:41)

This would really depend on the competition level in the state. Most fast states like Texas, Cali, and Illinois to make it to state you have run sub 8 minutes, so it would be closer to 1:52 to 2:00. For the 4x 1600 again for fast states to make it to finals in the 1600 you have to go sub 4:30. I would say fast states 4:15/4:50. These are close to the times it takes to at least walk on in college. I think that is normally the target for most serious high school runners.

I just used NYS indoor relay records at 4x880 and 4xmile and rounded up to get what I figured would represent the average leg on the average outdoor state record.
Just back of the envelope math type numbers are good enough to use here as generalizations.
thanks for the more detailed info.
When I was in high school the trifecta for us was:
Sub 50 - 400
Sub 2:00 - 800
Sub 4:20 - 1600
No, those times aren't equivalent, but they were the round number that were the biggest mental barriers for people.
Of the 3 goals mentioned above, the sub 2 was the goal most people set.
There were no benchmarks near me in the 3200, but I would guess sub 9:30 would be a good round number.
We also had a ridiculously easy 5K course in XC where the top guys in the state wanted to go sub 15:00, but I think the benchmark for normal meets was just going sub 16:00.

4:50 for a girl is much tougher than 4:15 for a guy. If you look at rankings, around 40 girls have run 4:50 (about half seniors) and around 150 guys have run 4:15. Most 4:50 girls will be getting full rides, not looking to walk on. I do think it’s generally easier for girls to walk on though due to roster sizes and Title IX requirements.
And to the OP, 2:20 is definitely easier. 2:20/5:15/11:20 are probably more equivalent performances in our area (and major goals as that puts you in the conversation to qualify for state).

In 2016, I got a chance to watch Domenic Perretta of Beaver Falls, PA clean the slate of our state's top runners for his 3rd year in a row. His stride and effortless form was just incredible to watch. He's the current record holder in the state at a low 1:50. He's a sophomore at PSU now. Wish him the best.

Cool story bro! had nothing to do with the conversation but yeah good for u
A big one in my state is sub-10 2 mile. Sub-4:30 is a big one too. With the upcoming XC season, I think a lot of guys will try to run 5k under 16.

He wiped the competition in 2A. He might hold the 2A state record in the 800 but he definitely wasn't faster than the 3A record.

The post was in regards to what were elite and average times in HS..I referenced as a coach I watched a small school runner clock a 1:50.10..yes and that's the fastest recorded time ever in the state of PA across big and small school..before you spout of an insecure beta male comment..check your facts

You are actually just wrong. At least 5 guys have run under 1:50 in PA since 2010. Josh Hoey ran 1:48 just this year. Maybe you need to check your facts brotato.

So the 800m state record at the AAA level is owned by John Lewis who was from a big school outside of Philly, and he now runs for Clemson, looks like he ran a 1:48.7, dear god that's fast for 18 years old. Up until 2015 and 2016, both AA and AAA 800m records were from the 80s. I too am from the area where Perretta ran and to the above poster, I'll agree he was something special to watch. I've followed track closely over the years and from our small corner of Western PA, there hasn't been as dominant of a runner that I can recall. It's important to note too, his school hardly fosters a team as they're that small of a school with little to no coaching resources either. It's an old mill town where crime has traditionally been rampant. Rough area. So for him to perform how he did, really was incredible. Great to hear he's at PSU now.
To answer the Question, I consider 1:56-4:25-9:30 benchmark times because that is at the point that you start thinking about D1. Those get you into the low level programs.
To answer the secondary question, I agree with posters who put the other poster in his place in regards to facts. Do some people not know how to use milesplit? It took me 10 seconds to verify that there are at least 5 guys better than the so called record holder.

The thread is about target times not when you saw some kid run an outlier.
If you are a HS coach and you have a kid running 500-431, it's not a a big deal, once the kid starts to run sub430 you can think lower D1. sub2 in the 800m is still OK, but not a big deal, get into the 150-55 and you catch people's attention. 3200 needs to be sub930 for anyone to care at all and you need to be close to 9:00-910 to win much.

I think some of you really need to check your insecurity at the door with these responses. In most states, you won't find many HS'ers eclipsing the 1:50 mark. They're true outliers and in the state of PA, the above guy is right, for nearly 30 years, it didn't happen. Go run some more miles and relax. Clayton Murphy, an Olympic Bronze medalist ran a 1:53 I believe, and Symmonds was a D3 guy, so let's not pretend like clicking off a sub 1:50 is some new norm that you all have cracked the code for.

Anytime a HS kid goes sub 9 in the 2 mile is just amazing. It's probably more common that it was 20+ years ago, but still nonetheless, that's incredible strength for somebody very early in their development. I remember a kid in HS, he ended up playing football in college, he never trained for track, just showed up and dominated the 400. Totally untrained he ran a high 47 or low 48 in the 400. He had a great football career, but I always wonder what he could have ran in the 400 had he been trained and developed at the college level and beyond.
