I am currently running in Hoka Napali, close, but not quite the answer. Suggestions please.

Hokas are s***. Get out of that crap.
Nikes new shoes with the React cushioning are light, soft, and responsive. The Epic React and Odyssey React are both great. More models to come too.
nike 4% and the sketchers GOrun ride 7
Skechers Gorun Ultra Road 2 is the closest you can get to Clifton 1. Nike Epic React isn´t even close.
My experience:
Clifton 1: Tongue too thin, but otherwise great shoe.
Clifton 2: Caused Hoka Toe Toe, but otherwise great shoe; liked them better than the first version.
Clifton 3: Perfect
Clifton 4: Too Heavy. Didn't even purchase.
Napali: Essentially the exact same shoe as Clifton 3. Waiting for them to go on sale so I can buy a couple more pairs.
Skecher GoRun Ultra: Fit just like Clifton 1 but with a better tongue. Make sure to order a half-size up from your Cliftons.
That should be the GoRun Ultra Road, btw.
the ultra is the trail version.

Agree with what you said but I, like many others could not get the two on (to narrow) . None of the follow up Cliftons have had the same soft cushion feel.. They were a perfect recovery and slow run shoe me. Have a bunch of 3s but they are not even close to the same feel.
i liked the clifton but also had issues with the toebox. if you're sold on the hokas, i'd try the hupana--i've really liked my pair. way more responsive, feels (and looks) more like a running shoe, a little lighter...
react go to it. wrote:

Although I like the initial feel of the Clifton 3, the cushioning seems to go dead on me very quickly, and it then becomes a chore to run in. I don't recall having quite that experience with any of the many other shoe models that I've run in over the years. I recently purchased a pair of the Tracer 2, which has the fit and feel of a racing flat, but -- so far, at least -- seems substantial enough for me to train in. ("Train" doesn't seem like the right word for what I do these days. It's really just running that's not racing, and that's not directed toward racing.)
What about the Altra Duo? Gingerrunner says so on youtube anyway. I haven't worn them.

I have Napali also and like them a lot. They've gone up $10 since first released and since they're a limited run exclusively for RunningWarehouse, I suspect they'll be all gone and never get discounted. Hope I'm wrong.
Altra Escalante, especially the "racing" edition.
Yes they're zero drop and take a little adjustment. But cushion to weight ratio is miraculous and reminiscent of the Clifton 1, but the TPU stays cushioned about twice as long.
Thanks for input. Tried the Nike React Odyssey. Very disappointed- sorry Nike employee. I have about 100 miles on my Napali’s. Like them a little more.
Ordered some Sketcher’s Ultra Run 2 road shoe. Reviews are favorable about the cushioning. I will report back.
One thing I have noticed with the Napali, they are more comfortable when I pick up the pace. Hoping I like the Sketchers and would use them on my easy days. Actually, soon to be 75, most of my days are easy. Closing in on 89,000 road running miles. Believe me the cushioning of the old Hoka Clifton 1 worked great for me. PR days are long gone. Just want comfort as I strive towards getting to 100,000 miles. I have promised myself, once I get there, I will stop logging my miles. Nick:)
