This season, I was converted from distance training like I've done in the past, to pure sprint training, in an effort to help me improve on speed and sprint mechanics for the 400m. Last year, I was doing a weird thing where I did distance training for 800m/1600m, but I excelled at the 400m (PRs last year of 2:07.75/4:53.63/52.61) so it was sort of assumed that I would improve more with true sprint training.
However, lately, I have been failing to meet up to my times from last year in the 400m.
Last year, I ran, in order: 54.09, 54.03, 53.31, 52.85, 52.99, 52.61, 53.39.
This year, I've run, in order: 55.39, 54.38, 53.95, 55.40.
I'll admit that I didn't start running the open 400m until mid-April last year, and ended off early to mid-May. This year, I started running the 400m early-March, with my last time of 55.40 falling in the same week that I ran 53.31, one whole year ago.
I've run everything from the 100m to the 1600m this year, with times of:
12.11 for 100m (early-March)
24.07 for 200m (mid-April, the same day as 55.40 this year)
53.95 for 400m (mid-April, exact same day as 54.03 last year, in less pleasant conditions then)
2:08.54 for 800m (early-April, in the rain; ran while pissed off)
5:09.45 for 1600m (same day as 100m)
Now I've provided all of that information to sort of spark the question: could my fall off in my 400m time be because of my change in training style? I feel that having all of the speed endurance I was doing last year for 1600m and 800m must have benefitted my 400m times greatly, as every race I had done up to my PR of 52.61 last year was on a standing start. I feel like that lack of endurance/speed endurance may be the reason for my failure in meeting up to my expectations for the 400m this year, despite my seeming improvement in speed. My goals this year are sub-50 and sub-2:00 for 400m/800m, as those were my event focuses for this year. I have also had an issue with not being able to get out for my first 200m, which my coaches describe it as "getting out like a distance runner", an issue I was unable to fix up until my 52.61 PR, and since then, I've been unable to duplicate. Could the reason behind my lack of matching up to my times be something more than just physiological reasons (as this year I feel that I have way more expectations set out for myself in the 400m than I did last year)?
Any help or comments on this matter would be appreciated.
