So I ran Boston on Monday. It was just my second marathon, and decided to wear flats. My qualifier I ran 2:41 in trainers, and went out at a comparable pace for this one, 1:19 through the half.
I felt really good for the first half, and then around mile 17 or so, I noticed that my legs were feeling sore. Not a feeling that I usually get during runs. Usually in the second half of a long run, legs can feel a bit heavy but not sore. Then hills went awful. 6 min miles turned to 6:30s, then 7s, then 7:30s. Just couldn’t feel like I could get the legs opened up at all.
Anyways, I ran 1:29 for the second half en route to a 2:48. What impact, if any, do you think the flats had on my performance? I’m certainly not blaming it on that, but I think it played a factor, maybe even more than the conditions did.
PS: I don’t run in my flats very often.
