Would be great to hear from some other runners - trying to get a sense of what is normal. Do your knees ache after long runs? What do you do for them?
Over the past year I have slowly ramped up from 10mpw to 30-35 mpw. Right now I’m in a base phase so its all slower steady miles - 9:45 avg pace, heart rate always under 145, usually 130s avg. I have averaged 30+ mpw for 6 weeks and I alternate between 10-12 mile weekly long runs. Running my second half-marathon on May 12th.
I am 44, 5’8”, 150lbs. l look athletic but I’m new to real endurance training. My muscle occasionally ache from running but mostly it is my knees. Ive had a few acute bouts of what feels like runners knee that goes away when I ease up a bit or take an extra day off. I added leg strength exercises to combat runners knee but now the joints, mostly the right knee, still feel achy after runs over 4 miles. Maybe this is just normal running discomfort?
I have A LOT of sneakers I have tried to alleviate the wear and tear. My commute changed last year too so I have 45 minutes of stop-and-go traffic each way daily - some days my right knee hurts by the time I get home. Driving feels like it may be contributing.
Supposed to start speed work in two weeks and I’m hoping my body will adapt before then.
