I am taking the above literally and saying "Bull".
There are times where backing off is necessary. You get better during recovery not by just pushing yourself blindly.
At times REST is the most important thing you can do and is all too often neglected.
I remember hearing Steve Scott talk about how he would adjust workouts based on feel. If he got to the track and was supposed to do some many 200s in such and such a time and after warming up and doing one or two was not hitting the times or feeling like he could complete the workout that he would adjust and sometimes bag it and come back the next day.
Joe Vigil is a master at adjusting workouts after talking with his athletes.
