Both act like self-righteous pricks, and neither seem to give a damn about trail etiquette (at least where I live). But who do you think is worse to run into?

Equestrians.
Cyclists are the worst and horses are like bicycles that poop.

I totally believe you about equestrians where you live - I guess around my parts, it's a little different, maybe luckily. The few trails I frequent where they seem to be, the riders are always seem super friendly, wave hello with a smile, move out of the way, all that stuff. I kind of look forward to seeing the horses as I run by. Beautiful animals, and (for me) as much of a highlight of trail running as the groups of deer I often run into.
Never had an issue with hikers, either.
I've never had trouble with either. Slow down, say hi, be polite and everyone can share the trail. If you make a connection with people, even just in passing, everything goes smoother.
In case you didn't know, horses have priority over everyone else using a trail, and for good reason because they are big and unpredictable. IMO, dogs are a much bigger problem on the trail than horses. A horse has never bitten me, but a dog has. Fortunately, it only got a mouthful of my running pants.
In our parts horses have the right away. Then the hikers, runners and bikers. The number of people who have no idea the rules and flow is unbelievable. I do not care for the horses but not going to spooke them. Even a little horse has big feet. Tread carefully good people.
Horses you should slow down for and not spook.
Bikes are fast and it is their duty to not hit you and be aware.
Hikers are slower and chill and it is your duty to go around them.
I've found the race trail runners can be the rudest like the trail belongs to them because they're in a meaningless race.

There was this horse girl in middle school who would always try and mess with me. I was 11 and didn't know what a vag-na was so I didn't know what she was trying to do. Point is, people who ride horses are rich, white , catholics who want to reproduce with me.
I'm trying to stay positive on here for 2018, so it's great you felt comfortable enough with yourself to share your fantasy publicly here. It's sad, but, you know, good for you. However, later on when your mom calls you upstairs for dinner I want you to take a good long look at her and think about what she would say if she knew you were posting these sorts of things on a public message board. Maybe in the future you should write all messages as though your mother will be reading them. Enjoy your meatloaf.

+1
Mountain biker punks, dirt bikers, snowmobilers, cops...girl scouts
Everybody on the trails can be a contributer to misery. I generally slow down for horse and walk by them, it's usually not a problem. Mountains bikers are mostly alright, but some don't slow down. Hikers usually get out of the way because I'm barrelling down the trail and looking intense. Other joggers can be real a-holes and I get more politeness from random guys on the street.
Just try to be polite and considerate, people, even if others aren't.
Cyclists.
Doesn't matter as long as their not wearing an abundance of cheap cologne.

Horses are basically big deers without horns. It should be legal to shoot them during deer season.
