The Brooks CEO had it right, at least when seen as a generalization. I forgot that Kipchoge won until reminded later in that thread, even though I'm a fan of running as a sport and watched the race. I don't remember the women's winner, and you apparently don't either.

I remember Carlos Lopes and Joan Benoit won in 1984. That was the first Olympics that I watched on TV. And I remember Lopes Nikes too, though I don't remember the model name. I know older history from before my time, like Shorter winning in 1972. Funny how the recent stuff isn't sticking in my memory. Probably from getting old.

Bordin Wore ASICS. Not certain what the shoe was actually called. ASICS was big on custom shoes and still are in Asia.

Abebe Bikila wore self branded in '60 and Puma in '64.

I can do brands but actual models within a brand? You're good. I can't see in that sort of detail. Bikila in '64 was in Puma. I've never seen photos of Wolde in '68. Shorter was in addidas in '72 though there has always been some discussion about the actual model and we seemed to decide it was specially made and never on the market. Cierpinski in '76 was in addidas, the model looked like the Dragon and also looked like the same shoe Jack Fultz wore when he won Boston that year. I don't know if Cierpinski had made the switch to Asics by '80 but I sort of think he did. Lopes has been covered here. Pretty sure Bordin was in Asics in '88 and I think the same for Young-cho in '92 but won't swear to it. From there the only one I know was Baldini in '04 who was an Asics guy. And as Brooks is the inspiration for this thread I think they do have a medallist in their shoes. I'm pretty sure Lorraine Moller bought herself a pair of Brooks for the '84 marathon after New Balance dumped her.

1988 Gelindo Bordin wore asics .

1992 Hwang Young-cho woreasics.

1996 Josia Thugwane wore Nike.

2000 Gezahegne Abera wore Mizuno.

2004 Stefano Baldini wore Asics.

2008 Sammy Wanjiru as we all know he wore Nike.

2016- Kipchoge- Nike

2012-Kiprotich- Nike

2008-Wanjiru- Nike

2004-Baldini- Asics

2000- Abera- Mizuno

1996- Thugwane- Nike

1992- Young-cho- Asics

1988- Bordin- Asics

84 and 80, Nike and Adidas as noted already.

Surprised to see no Adidas as they have and had many talents.

I've been following track / distance running for 20+ years and I forgot that Kipchoge won.

Olympic marathon champions I can name off the top of my head:

Men

- 1960: Bikila

- 1964: Abebe Bikila

- 1972: Shorter

- 1976: Cierpinski (only because Shorter came 2nd)

- 2004: Baldini (because Meb came 2nd)

- 2008: Wanjiru (because Hall was in the race & I payed attention)

Women:

- 1984: Joanie

Pretty sure shorter ran his gold medal win in the Onitsuka Tiger, which is not far off the asics hyperspeed of today.

Bad mouthing your target demographic is BAD for BUSINESS.

Let's be honest, they aren't putting out shoes as popular as Air Jordans. Nobody is getting jumped for their Brooks. Rappers aren't rapping about Brooks or rocking Brooks. They only people I see wearing Brooks casually are Dads wearing their running shoes.

Do people remember the silver and bronze medalists?

How could one forget Rupp got bronze and Lilesa silver with the protest gesture?

I don't see how any true distance fan forgets the top three!!

No. Shorter was in addidas in '72. I mentioned this earlier. It was a yellow shoe with the stripes either black or dark blue. We all tried to find it on the market at the time but no one could and we figured it was a specially made shoe. I think he was in Tigers by '76 but am not sure.
