Doesn't matter what the classification is. Junior (U20) status is determined by age. Can't turn 20 during the year of the performance.
Ritz ran faster his freshman year, but he turned 20 on 12-30-2002 and his freshman NCAA Indoor Champs was in 2002. 13:50 at the Championships.

Outdoors, yes, I'm sure you are right. Indoors I am not so sure. A lot dont run indoors as they are adjusting to new training still and just ran a cross country season that was probably a step up in intensity from high school.

Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
