So, I have an athlete that has a different athletic background than most people I've had over the years.
Basically, a guy straight out of middle school came in having run 40 miles per week of purely easy miles with his dad for around 3 years. I'm a bit doubtful that he could really do well after already running so many miles, but from what I know many of the Kenyans and Ethiopians have done much more than this and turned out fine. His times aren't anything spectacular compared to others that started running early on (and definitely nothing spectacular for his mileage), but he hasn't really done any high intensity training or anaerobic training at all. I don't even think he's ever done strides, so that's literally nothing in terms of speed work. Most of the kids I've had coming in have been either soccer players or non-runners who have speed but lack endurance, and most of them do very well running low mileage and high intensity.
Could he benefit more from another type of training, or is it alright to just give the same low mileage and high intensity training? Usually I would have everyone run like this (which ends up being fine), but with him running pure miles so long I'm not sure it's the best choice.
