What workout(s) do you think are the best predictors of what one can race a mile in?
Besides 1xMile, of course :)
8x400?

8x400?
Current mileage, average mileage over last 12 weeks ?
Good workouts:
1. 16x 200m up a grassy hill
2. 12 x 300m with 100m jog
3. 6 x 800m with 200m jog
4. 8 x 1200m with 400m jog
These are good workouts to guess what you current mile time is.
3 sets of 4x400 with 1 min rests, 5 min rest/jogging 2 min in between sets. Try for goal mile pace.
This workout is actually a 3-tier one, which starts out 2-2 1/2 months from goal race and is done with 90 seconds rest. The second workout is 75 seconds, then the final one, roughly 10 days out from goal race is the one listed above with 60 seconds.
Look it up.
Failing to mention recoveries is idiotic
3x800 with full recovery (10 min-12 minutes) is a pretty effective one, IMO.
You should be able to race a mile at about the pace you can run a 1200 solo time trial.
