So, the early signing period ends tomorrow, and I'm wondering...is there a benefit to signing early? If a person does sign early, would he/she be locked into that school? Thanks!

You are locked in unless you want to give up a year of eligibility. Plus side is you are done and have guaranteed your spot. You can start running for the shear fun of it without the intense pressure of each race being under scrutiny. If you don't sign and you are not a top recruit you can bet the money will go elsewhere. The coach won't just sit around waiting as there are other recruits in the queue.
But if your friend isn't sure/doesnt love the school, they can wait. I wanted my kid to wait cuz I thought there would be other options as the top kids turn down schools and money frees up. She on the other hand really wasn't interested in a possible better deal. She like her offer, school and team. I am pretty darn proud of her for not listening and choosing her own path. She went from being freaked about NXR to being relaxed. Rather then running for potential scholarship $$ she now wants to rock it to help make her new program look good.
Thanks so much! That was incredibly helpful!
Did you/he/she sign or did ya opt for staying in the game for round 2?
