First post here, and it's been a nearly 2 year hiatus from serious running (a nice break with lots of travel, cycling, and skiing). Alas, I've finally got the bug again. I know this is a topic that's been discussed, but I'm seeking some specifics I can't find, so thanks in advance for your patience and sharing your experience:
I've long used the NB 890 as my go-to distance shoe (10k+), rotated with the 1400 for shorter tempo runs up to about 15k. I was on the 890v5 and the 1400v2; size 9.5 in both. It looks like the 890 has been replaced by the Zante and that they're now on version 5 of the 1400 - both appear to be different enough from 2+ years ago that I don't really know what to expect.
A friend of mine speaks the virtues of the newer line of Adidas distance shoes, so I'm now intrigued by the Boston 6 and the Adios 3; both of which get phenomenal reviews and frequently compared to the NB lineup I'm so fond of.
Obviously, the best solution is go try them all on. I recently moved to Reno, which surprisingly lacks a single running store that carries true racing shoes from either NB or Adidas! My plan is to order everything online and return what I don't keep, but would like to refrain from buying 4 different shoes in 2 different sizes (9.5 & 10 since I've read the Adidas and current 1400s run small).
So my questions for anyone familiar with all these shoes:
1. For anyone familiar with the older 890v5 and 1400v2: Do the current Zante and 1400 run about the same in the forefoot? If I was a 9.5 then, am I still? What about the Boston/Adios?
2. I love the superior "feel" and lightness of the 890/1400, but wouldn't mind the 1400 to be ever so slightly stiffer up front. How do the Zante & 1400v5 compare to prior versions in that regard? And the Adidas?
3. Price & longevity: I love that New Balance has kept their pricing at about $100 for both shoes. That said, I only get about 300-350 miles on the 1400 and about 400-450 on the 890. The Adidas are each $150 and I've read that they wear better up to about 500 miles. True?
Thanks everyone - happy to be back on the road!!!
