Griak 2017 - DI teams missing?

  • Where did everyone go?

    Looking through the starting box assignments and this meet just isn't what it used to be.....which was one of the best meets for DI competition in the US....thoughts on what has reduced this to more of a Regional type meet?

    A lot of them will be at Notre Dame and a few other large meets next weekend. Perhaps the timing was different this year?

    Looking back at the past 5-6 years, this year's field is pretty typical IMO

    Griak hasn't been a national attention worthy meet since Wisconsin stopped going, but FloTrack loves hyping it up anyway

    It is because Gary Wilson, former Minnesota women's head coach, who had still been directing the Griak, retired from directing the meet in January. No one went out and recruited teams this year, which is what Wilson did. He kept the meet flying for years.

    One of the reasons we would go.

    The other big one is that we prefer to race every other weekend and this weekend is not one that lines up well for that schedule working backwards from conference, Wisco, etc...

    Griak has never lined up well with the every other week schedule; but when good mid western teams went, it made sense for teams outside the region to go to try and accumulate points.

    A few down years in terms of attendance though will kill a meet that is out of sync.

    Next weekend is a bigger weekend for teams. Greater Louisville, Chili Pepper, Dellinger Invite, and especially Joe Piane.

    Everything below ALSO it was 90 degrees and everyone knew it was going to be 90 degrees because it's been 90 degrees and still is.

    Gary Wilson WAS the reason teams attended. He worked his butt off to recruit teams to attend. He had a little money to work with and give some teams funds, but I always attended because of Gary, and what he put into the sport. His replacement is not very good, and teams will not attend because of her.
