Try getting some time to talk you your coach alone. Do not approach him with this in front of anyone.
The worst thing you can do is not communicate with your coach. If he/she is human then they want you to succeed. They may have good reasons for what they do. (Perhaps the Athletic Director wants the team to stay close to the school or only run in certain areas. Maybe he is trying to keep the team out of trouble because of the previous coach. There are reasons for this beyond his not knowing how to train runners. But he may also not know anything about training. How will you know and be able to help him if you do not talk to him? You do not know what you do not know.)
If he will not change things after talking to you, have the whole team question him before practice. My team did this to me, although it was for different reasons. (I did not like them missing practice for example.) That shocked me, but it helped out eventually.
