Nice. I'm 71, and this inspires me. There were few cars, and not so many roads like now. Weston had to use a compass, slog through fields and mud, follow railroad tracks.

There is a story about a walker from the late 19th/early 20th century -- Edward Payson Weston. He walked one mile each and every hour, 24 hours every day, for something like a month. During 1909, at age 70, he was the first to walk from San Francisco to New York in 100 days, covering 4000 miles. The distance is likely an exaggeration. He likely walked closer to 3000 miles. There are a couple of books about him that I haven't read but people who have enjoyed. This guy's wiki page is really interesting -- he admitted to chewing coca leafs (doping) when he walked over 100 miles in 24 hours.

If so, that would disqualify her run.
No it wouldn't, it's irrelevant. The Garmin is just so people can follow the track online.

What course? The course sandy is doing? Or the one Mimi is doing? Or any of the other thousands of potential routes they could choose. Imbecile.
Course cutting is not allowed.
There is no course cutting in a Trans Con.
How should that work?

FYI: I am using Sandy as a timing point because she is more consistent in terms of pace than Mimi is.
I think Mimi's cadence data demands an explanation - it's just totally abnormal. Take a look at yesterday afternoon:
http://www.movescount.com/moves/move180933599
Cadence constantly jumping between 190 and 140, every 20-30 seconds. Her other runs over the past weeks have similar cadence data. I can only think of a few explanations:
1. She is alternating run/walk, every 20-30 seconds. Anyone want to speculate how likely that is? I can understand doing a run/walk, but every 30 seconds?? And wouldn't her average pace be a lot faster than it is, if she were doing a 50/50 run/walk?
2. This is some kind of measurement or graphing error.
3. This is an indication of cheating somehow.
I don't like any of these explanations, but if forced to choose one I'd probably go with measurement error.
I don't seem to accept that it is actually the 11th today.

Might be an injury. That is the best I can come up with -- limping along. Running like that is not easy, at least for me. I find a reasonable steady pace works best.
Measurement error doesn't seem to account for the erratic charts. Mimi stopped the heart rate data which might help people who know more about how that compares to pace and cadence than I do.

I noticed the same on Strava. Did these cadence jumps just start in the last couple of weeks or has it been steady throughout? Or did they begin once we started paying closer attention and the Race Drone trackers were turned off? If it's a measurement error or something with the Suunto watch I think you would see it for all of her runs from the beginning.

Here is a map from today.
Scam has looked at earlier data and recent data. His spoof tool worked well for earlier data -- reasonable steady, I assume. Not so well for recent data because if the randomness. The change over seems to have occurred on the "vacation data" that signified several things; pass the half way point, meeting Asher the next day, and approaching larger cities.
This is from the afternoon of September 11th. The cadence data from then looks similar to now (a lot of starting and stopping), at least to my eyes:

So it could be something with the Suunto Spartan Ultra

The speed and cadence charts overlay very well so it could be genuine. I, like Mimi, was born in Britain and the walk, jog method was quite common in my childhood. It was how I got to and from school everyday. The advantage is you cover distance relatively quickly but don't get hot and sweaty. Think of it as a walker's equivalent to Fartlek running. I've also employed this method at the end of some long hikes as the end of the trail, and the pub, appear on the horizon.
The big disadvantage is your average speed is obviously lower than a steady jog.

I spot checked a few runs on Movescount, and the weird cadence pattern seems to have been happening since the beginning. All of her runs that I checked showed a similar alternating cadence pattern. But in early runs, she was switching cadence every 90 seconds or so, and now it's more like every 30 seconds.
You can see the weird cadence pattern in Strava too, but it's easier to see in Movescount, if you use their zoom tool.
Maybe this is an intentional strategy on her part, but it sure seems strange to me.
Interesting. How long would you estimate each walk/run interval lasted? If Mimi is doing 30 seconds of walking and then 30 seconds of jogging that seems inefficient to me, but maybe it gives her something to break up the monotony of the trip.
