Progression:
6th Grade: 8:4x - 8:2X - 7:5X
7th grade: 8:1X - 7:2X (Middle School XC) - 7:4X
8th Grade: 7:4X (Biking) - 6:4X (Middle School XC) - 6:0X (Somewhat consistent 15-20mpw for around 6 months, some breaks)
9th Grade: 20:3X (30mpw, 5K XC) - 5:1X/11:3X (45mpw, Mile/2-Mile)
Team practices just started today and my Summer training is over. I've been feeling great all Summer, and there is no doubt that my PRs will get shattered. Even after a hard tempo today, I felt like my legs were strong and I could still keep on rolling even during cooldown. I did get in a lot of good training, but I am still somewhat doubtful that only 10 weeks of training is enough to produce the miracle people say it produces. My plan was not exactly the Summer of Malmo, but the intervals I did were similar and the workload was similar (apart from having 1 extra workout a week).
From what I've heard, the Summer of Malmo seems to be base training for the crosscountry season rather than just training to get faster. Many XC programs (like the one I'm in) run much lower mileage in-season (30-40mpw) than in the off-season. Considering that I've averaged ~60mpw this offseason, will I instantly peak because of the lower mileage, or will I still be able to taper and improve when my coach wants me to?
Also, when will most of the improvement come from the Summer of Malmo? I am close to 5:00 Mile shape right now, so I have improved a good amount in the off-season, though it's nothing extreme.
Finally, what goals should I have coming into the season? I'm unsure of what I should be aiming for because I'm not sure what kind of improvement or result the Summer of Malmo will produce. Right now I'm hopeful that I'll be able to break 18.
