Is it true that long distance running makes you slower at sprinting? If so, what about low mileages like 20-30 mpw?

Distance can make you slower if all you are doing is distance. If you incorporate some speed sessions into your distance training your speed should not drop.
I'm a 400m guy and do cross country. I run a 50.8 and a 23.13 200. I'm going to be a senior and am working to break sub 50 this year and compete at state. I believe cross country has helped me mentally for workouts and made me stronger for competing in multiple events in meets in track. My coach has me do low mileage and tempos on the track when the other guys do long stuff. The only way it would make you slower is if you only run distance like the other poster said. Incorporating sprinting drills, hills, and a workout like 5x60 alactic sprints at all out effort w/ full rest helps maintain/increase pure speed. Do this once a week to start and you could build up to 2. Focus on form and making each stride powerful. Lastly, I would do some strides before every workout and after every easy run you do.
