I think Bolt was on the cover twice and I can't remember the last track athlete on the cover before him.

Yah, it's not like she is the most accomplished high school track athlete of all time or anything....

Correct. That would be Jim Ryun.

I imagine it's because Gatorade is a big sponsor. I laugh when these big-time journalists at places like SI tell us not to let a meet pay for us to go cover it. We hardly ever do it but when we have, we've always disclosed it. Meanwhile, SI gives out cover access all the time for sponsor related stuff, in exchange for an interview, etc.
They're both in kind of a hurdle pose, kicking their legs up. This is the first of many for McLaughlin, not necessarily SI but other major magazines, I am sure.
As far as whether she is good enough to merit this: consider that she won't turn 18 until August, yet she already has national or world youth/junior records all over the place at 100mH (an age group record of 13.34 from 2014), 300m hurdles, beating Demus's record by over a second in her first try, 400mi, 400mH, and a sub 50 400m split.
No it wouldn't. Mclaughlin has the top seven all-time prep times in the 400H. Ryun is only #2 in the mile. Not to mention all of the additional prep and world Jr records she possesses.

Sydney vs Jim thread, here we go?
This is going to sounds like a troll effort, but I am being serious.
Last night I flew with AMerican Airlines and they have those inflight magazines that are basically ads to travel anywhere with AA.
Either way, flipping through it there was an ad for Pandora jewelry and I am 99% sure it was Sydney M. Couldn't get s photo, but does anyone have a clue whether that is a) her b) legal under NCAA rules to be for an endorsement?

Let's not forget Bob Mathias

We shouldn't compare girls performances to boys, but if we do, she is #2 this year to mondo.
As for the baseballer, I don't think I is a real sport if you get extra points just for being left handed.
I might agree if Mondo would compete for USA.

Her 49.85 relay split in a flat 400 is very impressive--

She may be the future face of US track.

1) No idea if that is her
2) It is legal. A few years ago it wasnt, but ncaa lost the court case. There are a few models in the ncaa now. I forget the name of the distance girl everybody got into a tizzy about last ncaa xc season, but she would be an example if somebody wants to post.
I ran for ncaa before the new rule and the school made us take down the pictures of ourselves in our band website. I quit track the next season, I wanted to be a rockstar. I have a boring day Jon now. Guess I was a rebel without a cause.
She is very marketable, a LIKELY Future World Record Holder at 400 hurdles, and maybe the Woman Who breaks Marita Koch's 47.60 World Record (Which is a very hard record to break) Being White in a sport dominated by Black Females now (though both the 400 hurdles and 400 flat World Records are held by White Woman) immensely increases her marketability, more importantly her potential is unlimited, she could probably excel in other events as well if she chose, she has a good Long Jump, the 200, the 100 hurdles, I even think she could be Superb at 800, this is a great talent along the lines of JJK and Heike Drechler, enjoy her career as talent like hers only comes around about every 10-20 years. As far as marketability I don't know if she has a good personality or not, but even if her personality is not so great, her athletic performances will more than make up for it.
Actually ....
Betty Robinson was only 16 when she won the first female Olympic 100m.
And....
Houston McTear was a WR holder at 100 yards as a HS junior.
Her eyebrows are distracting and disturbing and are crying for a twitter handle of their own.

In 1965, when Ryun was a high school senior as McLaughlin is now, he ranked #4 in the WORLD in his event and beat the reigning Olympic champion and world record holder. McLaughlin is a great high school athlete, but she is was not world ranked last year and won't be this year.

I would have sworn she was black, or at least biracial. You sure about that "white" label?

Not sure what this guy is smoking, but Syd the kid is most definitely black.
