Assuming he's not much of a hiker, he probably left it somewhere fairly close to a turn-off/trail head/parking lot. That will limit the possibilities considerably. I wonder if he gave any thought to accessibility in winter. Probably not, but if he did, that would limit the possibilities a ton.
