I'm currently considering how to plan the speed workouts that my athletes will do over the summer.
I will have a small group of 4 runners who will increase their milage from 40 to 70 over twelve weeks and in addition to their progression of tempo/threshold running, I was looking for advice on how to approach improving their speed and speed capabiliaties.
The first post that I have is based off of JK's (I think) post which involves progressing to running 5 200s with 5-8min rest every week. My biggest concern with this is running the same workout every week for about 10 weeks. In addition the other concern I have is that this workout seems to target speed endurance more than top speed.

The second idea I had for developing speed with this group would be doing something more pure speed based. Its progression looks like this:
2 sets 5x40m with 2:30 recovery, 5 minutes between sets
2 sets 6x40m with 2:30 recovery, 5 minutes between sets
2 sets 5x50m with 3:00 recovery, 5 minutes between sets
4x60m with 3:00 recovery + 4x50m with 3:00 recovery, 5 minutes between sets
2 sets 4x60m with 3:00 recovery, 5 minutes between sets
3x80m with 3:00 recovery + 4x60m with 3:00 recovery, 5 minutes between sets
6x80m with 4:00 recovery

With the second set I have considered, it works more of the pure speed and anaerobic capacity. Basically what I am asking is which progression would be the most effective for my runners, thanks.
