Hi Letsrun,
Noticed a lot of career change type threads going around lately so I'll throw my situation and hat in the ring:
28 years old. Have boring job doing mainly clerical work but with tons of flexibility. It's a "management" job but really just customer service. I make $33,500 w/ health insurance and work primarily part time (24 hours a week most of the year)
Unfortunately I have a real ADD personality so the boredom of the position kills me. I've had it for the last 5 years but have been feeling in a super rut lately. A few of my choices are:
1 - Continue working this job indefinitely while earning extra cash on the side 15-20 hours a week. I calculated with random consulting gigs worth $15-25 per hour I could raise my wage to 55k or so.
Pros:
--> autonomy, flexibility, work from home
Negs:
-->the extra unpaid work like invoicing, setup etc. that goes into consulting
-->no career advancement
2 - Go back to night/weekend school for a year or 2 and get some sort of certification. switch careers.
Pros:
--> more employable
--> setting up for future
Cons:
--> likely less flexibility
--> don't know what I would study
3 - Start a business on the side and try to grow it
Pros
--> fun, engaging
Cons
--> costs money
--> unstable, might fail
So what are your thoughts letsrun community. Any other suggestions of options I may be missing?
