1:57 is a better performance (and will do better in regional/state level competition), but you'll see fewer 9:38s in dual meets and local invites, since kids will generally stick with each other for the first 2400 or so and the faster guys will end up running low 10s with fast closing laps.
It's not even remotely close
1:57 is like 9:20s broooooo
Check the iaaf scoring tables
Personally, 1:57 is really easy (when I was younger), about 9 mins for 3k was always really hard.
1:57.1 is superior
definitely the 1:57
definitely 1:57, I see a lot of guys that run 9:38 but cant break 2, and a lot of guys that can run 1:57 about, and they smash 9:38

In Illinois, 1:57.5 is the 800 qualifying time while 9:27 is the 3200 qualifying time so it's closer than you are leading on - that's for sure.
No question bro, 1:57 is way better

Oh yeah like my buddy who ran 1:54 and 10:43. He wasn't a 400/800 type either, so don't come at me with that crap. 1:57 is better, but not by as much as all y'all are saying.
1:57 indicates superior talent and maybe nowadays is somewhat rarer, if not particularly rare overall.
When I ran in HS in the 90s, however, there were at least 6 or 7 guys in our region who were 1:56 or faster, while maybe one or two guys could break 9:50. My senior year the winning time at the state meet for the 3200 was something like 9:35. The 800 time was around 1:53, with top 6 all under 1:56.
I'd say they're roughly equivalent. In better states, either time would qualify you for the state meet but neither would advance you to the finals. In those same states, it's not uncommon for 4-8 teams to have at least 4 guys that could run 1:57 or better based on 4x800 relay times. I'd say the same for 9:38 based on cross country times.

Pretty close. I would say slight edge to the 1:57 over the 9:38 . 1:57 is approx a 4:24 and maybe a 9:35 3200 maybe Depends on the race of course.
1:57
Girl's HS records: 1:59-high/9:38, both by Cain.
Actually, Cain's 9:38 is 9:36 for 3200. So 1:57 is better by far.

Ummmm.....No.
For the guy who said there were a bunch of 1:56 guys in his area in the 90s but only 2 guys at 9:50, that's because everyone was trying to go low volume high quality. One of those years the top 3200 in the nation was only 9:06.
Both would be high quality recruits for any division 2 program

When I was a sophomore my school had 10 kids run sub 2 in the 800. 1 fresh, 1 soph, 2 juniors, and 6 seniors. 5 of them could go under 1:57. I don't believe any went under 1:54.5. I think only 1 of them could get under 9:30 in the 3200. The track coach was all about low miles high quality. This was in '85.
