Residual Pain from Femur Stress Fracture?

Yes, the phantom pain is real. I get it when I'm running a lot if miles after fracturing my tibia. Just be a little cautious but it's nothing to worry about

Definitely real! I had a femoral stress fracture 3.5 years ago and felt weird sensations and dull aches in that area even at a year of healing. Keep an eye on it though- don't dismiss every pain as a phantom pain, but also don't freak out at every pain.

2 marathons within 12 months of your diagnosis or recovery? Please clarify. The way it is written I will assume it's from diagnosis. Are you male or female? Age? I will assume female over age 30.

I am concerned if this is the case because you have quite possibly suffered another stress fracture.

What have you changed? Clearly not your training because to have run 2 marathons after what I will assume is a 4-6 month hiatus while you recovered would mean that you have over trained and probably run on roads again!!

Did you see a nutritionist following your diagnosis? Did you change your diet?

The predominant causes of stress fractures are excessive running on roads and you are doing both.

Suffering a stress fracture in the exact same location is rare because the both calcification makes the bone harder however if you di not allow the bone to heal properly it can fracture again. It's quite possible you have a fracture in a new location.

I would recommend an X-ray and quite possibly an MRI if the X-ray is negative.

I am 43. Female. The stress fracture occurred last winter and I returned to running under guidance of PT and sports Medicine in May. I had a vitamin d deficiency which caused some minor osteopinia but have addressed that. I have also significantly reduced my typical mileage and incorporated a lot of cross training (swimming and cycling, hence Ironman this year). I trained and ran NYC Marathon comfortably in November and did the same for Ann Arbor a few weeks ago. Every so often I would experience some achiness and would foam roll, which made it go away almost immediately or by the next day. I just ran a 10k a little harder than usual (although I had been doing either one tempo run or one hill repeat run each week prior). Backed off mileage before the race. I was nervous about 'racing' and got a little paranoid a few days before the race and felt 'sensations' even though I wasn't running! I felt no pain or sensations the day of, during, or after the race. Two days later I had some achiness - did two short runs with no pain - but still a little achy the day after. Ironically the more I think about it, the more I notice the achiness and findyself tensing the muscles in my hip and leg. My right leg has never felt completely 'right' since the injury, despite full healing of the stress fracture.

I just wanted to provide an update... My leg feels great now. 100% back to normal. I took 2 days off from running, rolled everyday and did some strengthening. Then did a hard 50 mile ride and 9 mile run, rested a day after that and did a 6 mile run. No pain. After a day or two no achiness at all. Phantom pain is no joke! I got myself so worked up mentally. Both legs were sore after racing the 10k, my mind just chose to obsess over the previously injured one. Right as rain a week later :)
