Here's an interview he did after the recent IAAF Cross Country meet. Sounds like family ties played an important role.

His D2 cross country season had some good (24:11 8K at Chile Pepper) and some average (national meet finish). His indoor 3K conversion was 8:06 off an indoor meet in Colorado, and his 8:18 at indoor nationals was comparable to guys like Phllip Rocha (8:16), Jake Brophy (8:29) and Andrew Jordan (8:07). Obviously a lot of D1 freshmen redshirt, so some of his other peers don't have data to compare. He ran the USATF cross country meet in the middle of the indoor season, so maybe training was geared toward that distance?? Not sure "unimpressive" is appropriate. Seems like he's off to a solid collegiate start. Racing against college men instead of high school boys, and especially at distances of 8K and 10K, takes some getting used to.
