Current situation:
High school junior. Freshman 1600 4:39, injured soph year but ran 800 at end of outdoor season, 2:01. Indoor this year as junior (two meets only) 4:33, 4:30. This winter I averaged about 35-40 mpw. We only have four meets total indoor season with the last one being this Saturday. Running the 1600. ACT first try was 31, taking SAT in April and ACT again in June. Decent, but not stellar, GPA (3.5 unweighted, 4.13 weighted) with a solid course load.
Feel confident that I can get into the low 4:20's for sure in outdoor, maybe better than that, but my coach says you are only what your PR says you are. I agree.
Should I just wait to contact a coach until after outdoor is over? Is there any benefit to contacting before then with the times I currently have? What if I run under a 4:30 on Saturday? Still wait until I run something better outdoor? I will also have run some outdoor 800 times if I wait.
Also, I'm looking at a few D1 that I think I'm pretty sure I will get into, some that are competitive (U.S. News Top 25) and a few highly competitive (academic) D3 where I think I would also need admissions help. Would coaches give admissions push (not $$$) to a low 4:20's guy, especially at top academic D1 or D3 schools?
I've targeted these schools for location and current possible major. I've visited five of them already and will have visited the other four by mid April. I'm open to more than these, but I'm starting with the places where I'd want to be if running wasn't in the picture, even though I want to run.
Thanks.
