Obviously, no one should be coerced with regard to how they spend their discretionary income, and alums are not "obligated" to support university programs. That said, how do you feel about making financial contributions to your alma mater, no matter what program needs support?
I will admit that I tend to look unfavorably upon alumni who are either too cheap or too apathetic to give back to the institution from which they were graduated. I think it's especially reprehensible and shows a lack of gratitude if the alum was someone who received any sort of athletic or academic scholarship.
Personally, I make annual donations to my university's XC/T&F program, the academic program in which I studied, and the Alumni Association. I've had people tell me they don't owe the university squat because they already paid a boatload of tuition. That is certainly true in most cases, but I still think that alumni should give back to the institution (A) in appreciation for the experience that consumed a big chunk of their lives and (B) to help ensure sustainable opportunities for current and future students.
The above is just my opinion. Any thoughts in agreement or opposition?
