I had an 10 year old kid, probably 70lbs soaking wet, run 6:00 last year for 1600. He's a soccer player. He's decent, but parents are convinced he's the next Ronaldo. I'm trying to tell parents that he's got a ton of potential in track, and that he is likely in the top _____ % of runners nationally at that age. Parents are all soccer, all the time, and they seem to be driving the ship here, thinking that this kid is headed toward a full ride.
How do I convince them that he's a heck of a talent in track? How does that time stack up to national class 10 year olds? Yes, yes, I realize times at this age are often skewed, non-predictive of future success, and all that, but I do think it indicates some raw ability.
How do I convince the parents that this kid could be really, really good? He had a blast last year, and I think he's afraid of letting his soccer-crazed parents down.
