Do they have to be songs by American artists? Or by the band, America?

You're right, my apologies,

I'm curious why you specifically asked about America's worst decade (assuming you meant of music), but then included foreign artists, but great question, regardless. Cool you have a John Denver song in the mix. He seems largely forgotten, maybe because of the simple home spun nature of his songs. Glad I got to seen him before he passed. He, along with Neil Diamond were those acts for me, that every person has, that you were introduced to by your parents, that either secretly or openly, you really liked. I probably would have went for Rocky Mountain High, although my favorite JD song is Looking for Space. As a complete side note, his version of Oh Holy Night is the best Christmas song out there.
Here's mine (not confined to American artists)
1. Bohemian Rhapsody - C'mon, maybe the best song ever
2. Bridge Over Troubled Water
3. Golden Country - REO Speedwagon, a really underrated war era protest song.
4. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot
5. Superstition - Stevie Wonder
Honorable Mention as probably my favorite song, but not worthy of a best ever list is Styx' Crystal Ball.
Born To Run Bruce Springsteen 1975
Running On Empty Jackson Browne 1977
Don't Cha Stop The Cars 1978
Come Running Van Morrison 1970
Before They Make Me Run The Rolling Stones 1978
Every decade had some crap music. The 70's and 80's perhaps more than any other decades! But some very good music came out of that time as well.
Some personal favorites:
Albums
Moondance- Van Morrison
John Barleycorn-Traffic
Eat a Peach-Allman Brothers
Who's Next-Who
Tapestry- Carole King
Chicago-several albums
Mud Slide Slim- James Taylor
Mad dogs-Joe Cocker
Silk Degrees-Boz Scaggs
Several Paul simon albums
All Day Music-War
and I know most people don't like him, but Hot August Night is a superb album
Horse with No Name
Sister Golden Hair
The Dewey Bunnell Song
