Or is the 3200m time a more accurate one? My kid's friend is trying to figure out his potential time for the mile but he hasn't raced it yet. He has run 2:07 in the 800m, but his one 3200 is a 10:49.

I ran 2:06 and 4:28....but also 9:32.
I'm going to say 4:45.

Likely 4:45-4:50. 4:40 tops.
To answer your question, it works best when they're used together.
The 2:07 could suggest anywhere from 4:30-4:50.
The 10:49 could suggest anywhere from 4:40-5:00.
By giving both we can see that it's evident that your son's friend has much better speed than endurance(assuming the 3200 is accurate.)
I agree with the other posters that his mile is probably in that 4:45 range.
Thanks everyone! Just told this all to my friend, and not exactly understanding why this is, but she says he was thrown into that 3200m last minute by the coach and had never raced it before, so not sure if that's relevant. But his 800m times have been 2:07, 2:06, 2:09 (after a double -- he ran an 800 relay leg, too)
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
