What are the rules as they pertain to an athlete, graduated in 2011 from HS and competed one year in NJCAA competition, transferring to D3 after taking several years off?

they are very strict on having a heart beat and producing urine at regular intervals
10 semesters of full time status (12 credit or more) to use your 4 seasons of eligibility.
This.
If you were in school for one year, and used one season of track (or XC), you'll have three seasons left to use in 8 more semesters.
There is no clock in D3, as long as you were not in school, you are not losing eligibility.

Has anyone seen anybody 40+ compete for a D3 school? I'm seriously thinking about it when I go back to school after I finish my military career.

Go for it! I'd love to hear about your experience on these boards if you do this!

While I haven't seen any 40+ D3 student-athletes, I have seen quite a few "older" runners.
In New York, to earn your professional/permanent teaching credential, you must complete a Masters degree within 5 years of being hired as a full time teacher.
Quite a few teachers will work to gain tenure (3 or 4 years?) and then take a sabbatical to get/finish their advanced degree. With the large number of D3 teachers colleges in the SUNY system, many teachers return to complete grad work.
Cortland regularly (back in the JTD days) used to have past student-athletes (who had missed season(s) due to injury while undergrads) compete while doing grad work in education.

Yes. Phyllis Tuggle ran for Agnes Scott about 10 years ago, she was 43 when she earned All-American honors. She left college in 1983 to pursue a Olympic marathon goals, but it quickly failed. She ended up making the US Cycling team in 1985.
I'm a D3 coach, I'd be happy to consider it.

I saw a TV movie some 40 year old guy that made the football team at his college starring Robert Conrad some years ago.
