A few suggestions to consider on your list:
Annandale park in Santa Rosa, CA.
Some epic running trails in point Reyes national seashore (north of San Francisco).
If you're looking for something long and hilly, run a one-way between some of the parks in the "east bay" area of San Francisco. For example, run from chabot wilderness to redwood park or run from cull canyon in castro valley to Lake chabot.
Shoot, Lake Chabot itself is a great 9 mile loop of you stick to the shortest loop around it.
Another great one way run down here is lake del Valle to Sunol. It is about 22 miles, iirc. If I remember right, there are 3 spots to get water. You'll likely only see backpackers in the middle of that run.
Of course there are too many possible awesome trails in the Sierras too. Yosemite could merit pages to fantastic trail runs by itself.
Bridgeport could be a good lesser know spot for great trails.
Btw, I think your idea is a great one. It would be awesome to see a short blog on it. I hope you take the opportunity to use it to link between multiple good running spots, like spend 2 or 3 days in Colorado doing the high Desert and mountain running, hit up Arizona for some "real" desert trails, then head into california for a run at Yosemite, then 2 or 3 days near San Francisco, then one run on the north coast of california, then a few days in Oregon. A varied and wide ranging itinerary like that should be easy enough to set up.
When you've outlined your basic itinerary, you should use this site as well as Facebook to find friends as well as people you haven't met who live in the area to help with picking specific routes on a trail and maybe go for a run with you.
