But he died while be involved in what he loved...R.I.P.
Unsung hero, huge contributions to the sport. RIP, and thanks.
Such a devastating loss for Indiana State, the MVC, and the world of track and field, coach's influence went far beyond just coaching at Indiana State, he was a mentor, friend and all around good person to everyone he met or coached in life. 34 years at Indiana State, his legend will carry on. Rest in Peace coach, it ended far too soon for you.
Sad to hear this. Was recruited by him in high school. He was the mastermind behind the cross country course in Terre Haute and bringing so many great races there! Surprised a bit how little attention this is getting. Great man!
Agreed that this is deserving of being on the front page and hoping the Brojos are just working to gather info for their writeup. From serving as an official to coaching to creating the Terre Haute course to leading the team that managed all those DI Championships - this guy spent the last 34 years making our sport better for so many across the country.

Couldn't agree more. Great coach, but an even better PERSON. Sad day.
For being a long-term Hoosier in medium-sized town (not sure if he is from Indiana), John McNichols is a legend and should be remembered as so. He deserves so much credit for bringing the NCAA cross country championships to Terre Haute and running them extremely well, building the Indiana State program, and turning good runners into great runner.
I attended a Level II camp at Colorado Springs in the mid 90's. I was one of two high school coaches of the 18 selected. Coach McNichols treated me like gold and talked training and track in general trying to help anyone and everyone. I developed a strong respect for the guy and have followed his career at ISU. Sorry to hear this news.
a visitation will be held for coach McNichols Thursday from 3-8pm in Terre Haute
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11am at the Hulman Center (ISU's basketball arena).
If anybody is in the area please stop by to pay respect to a great coach and an even better human being who dedicated his entire life to making our sport better.
