My team is seeded to win state, and I want to run a smart race. I ran the course once, and finished in 17:16, going out in 5:10. I'm not sure if I need to go out faster or slower to break 17.

If your team is going to win state, you probably should be asking your coach about this.
you ran 17:16 going out in 5:10... Hmm let me think.. you went at a 5:10 pace and your pace was 5:30ish... that means you did 11:20 for the last two miles... which would be 5:40 pace, so say the last two were even splits
5:10, 5:40, 5:40. what do YOU think?
Go out at 5:20 and try to hold 5:30 5:30 and then get that under 17, you definatly can do it.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
