Some of the guys on my brother's team not going on spring break are doing a timed run on the track today. I was about to go for my run when he joked I should pace them for part of it.
I told him there was no way I could do it. He laughed, asked if I could do 9 minutes for 3k. I told him no and I'm dead serious. 9:00 3k is 4:48 a 1600. No way. Maybe if I was going to die if I didn't do it I could do it, but I wouldn't like my chances.
I haven't done anything at that pace. I'm now somewhat optimistic my foot is healthy and have been running everyday. I decided I want to start "Working out" so that means i've done strides once in a run, did maybe two by 10-15 minutes hard in another run, and did a high end run two days ago. Other than that its been easy running an hour to an hour and a half a day. I think after about 1200 the pace would kill me. Maybe i could make it 3k but i doubt it.
Not sure why i'm writing this. One I want to show people aren't always in shape no matter how fast they've run in the past and even if they've been running every day. People always come up to me and ask what I could run for 10k and through out 30 minutes. I laugh.
Also I can point out that i have a long way to go (or that i suck) and that trying to force a pace in a workout isn't the best idea, especially now when I'm just starting up again, once I cross my threshhold, i'm done, that's it. Say 5 minutes is a pace I could hold for a while (trust me its not), if I was going 4:53 I wouldn't make it too long.
It's one reason I think its good to work out by yourself at times. You don't try and force the pace and instead listen to your body if you're by yourself. Sure its good to have someone at times to push yourself but you can't force your fitness. I think way too many times people run too hard in workouts. You should be looking for a certain feel or rhythm in a lot of workouts and I think a lot of people miss this. The goal is not to be dead halfway through a workout.
This whole concept is one reason I vowed I wouldn't workout with anyone until I got in decent shape. At this point in my training a pace just slightly too fast can do me in as I have no buffering system.
