hello letsrunners,
i am 27 and started training with consistency in 2009.
before that i used to run occasionally, my times were around 19:30 for 5k and 40-41 for 10k.
in 2009 i started running like 50-60 mpw and discovered intervals, so 400m, 800m, 1000m, 2000m reps, depending on the period, started to make part of my routine.
i was able to drop my PB to 16:18 and 33:45, but these were in 2012 already. My HM PB is 1h15 from 2013 and Marathon PB is 2h41 from 2014.
since like the end of 2011 i have been running consistely 5ks in 16:20-16:50 and 10k usually around 34:00 - 34:30 but these ranges seem to be about my limits. I would like to reach a competitive marathon amateur level, dropping my times to 2h3X and then maybe a day high 2h20s but that will be impossible with my actual 5 and 10k times.
i was trying to count and for the last 5 years i've run about 20 road and track races of 5k around this time (16:20-16:50) and more than ten 10k races around 34:00 - 34:30 (i broke 34:00 only once, 33:45 and this was 2 weeks after i ran 16:18 for the 5k).
despite i have done hundreds of track sessions, some of them really focused in speed (like 200m reps, or even like 3 reps of 1000m under 2:55 with long intervals), many long runs, tempo runs, etc, i never seem to reach the next level.
recently i was so involved in a work project that i spent most of the last 2 months with very little training and i thought i would have lost all my fitness. I also gained 3 kg in this period (i am 5'8 and now 65 kg, before 62) what happens is that yesterday i've done 6x1000m w/ 60s rest and was able to complete avg 3'18" which is just like 2-3s worse than i used to run when i was in shape.
i've tried different methods of training but i never seem to be able to surpass this range of running 5ks at 3:18-3:22 min/km and 10ks at 3:25-3:28 min/km.
one thing i haven't done was increasing my mileage to say 70-80 mpw.
i never ran consistenly more than 60, not even when i have run a 2h41 marathon. could that be the reason why i don't seem to be able to run like a 15:30-45 and under 33:00?
have you ever been stuck for years in a certain range? what have you done differently to reach the next level?
