Damn, this guy was young and already a superstar. Just the other day he pitched 8 shut out innings against the Nats giving up only 3 hits. He was a very likeable guy with a great personality and was the face of the Marlins franchise.

Pretty sad. You can see the scene at the boat crash:

Very very sad. Huge star. Just announced his gf was pregnant. Let's hope she wasn't one of the others killed.
Yahoo is listing him as day-to-day.
He struck out 34.3% of the batters he faced. The only 2 pitchers in history with better strikeout percentages are Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez.

That's just for this season, not lifetime.

Lifetime now.
Call me jaded, but I usually assume that "boating accident" means "drinking accident".
GF wasn't on board. Three males.
Officials have stated that there is no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved. Autopsies have yet to be performed, however.
Going full speed into rocks in the middle of the night...no way alcohol was involved (eye roll).I'm sure he and his buds were great guys, but guys will be guys.

Can the girlfriend or her child (and I'm presuming he's the father) legally claim any of his assets?

I remember after Aaron Hernandez was arrested and was thinking how his GF was majorly screwed. I think she too was pregnant.

Another idiot who doesn't know the hell he's talking about. I am a Miami resident and am very familiar with Government Cut in Miami Beach. It is pitch black in that area at night. No lights along that jetty. The Coast Guard knew the driver of that boat (who was a friend of Fernandez) and Fernandez never drove that boat in the past.
That's what I was wondering, if maybe they didn't see the jetty. But wouldn't you be familiar with the area? Unless they haven't boated there before
Are you suggesting that Fernandez was driving the boat? How do you know that? The authorities said they didn't know who was driving.

Fernandez was not driving. The Coast Guard knew the driver. Not Fernandez.
The Police Chief said the jetty is very difficult to see at night. They were going at a high speed (judging from destruction of the boat) and probably never knew what happened. Heartbreaking for the families involved but at least they didn't suffer.
I want to know why there are no lights on rocks in a high traffic boat zone?
There are a bunch of buoys visible in the picture off the the side of the rocks, I would imagine they would have colored lights that indicate don't go the right or left of this buoy, to indicate the presence of a hazard. If that is indeed the case, a competent, unimpaired boater would be aware of those standard buoy warnings.
The Miami Marina is nearby and that is where the boat was docked. The jetty sticks out, it was cloudy last night, no moon and windy. They misjudged their location (not uncommon) and hit the jetty. There is also a jetty on the Fisher Island/South side of the channel.
