Serious question, if he was actually trying and barely broke 18 on his first 3 miles added together and with a break in between, how would he run a 17:28?
...because it is a workout. Different than a race. I assumed that he/she was not wearing spikes and that this is in the span of a normal training week, so he/she was probably not running on his/her best legs. I assumed that roughly 10 sec off of the first three per mile isn't too crazy when you consider being fresher, having adrenaline, wearing spikes, and running a heck of a lot harder. Even if the dude was wearing spikes during this workout, its not like they were treating it like a race. The workout was described as "uncomfortably comfortable", and not "really freakin' hard so I had to puke in the bushes afterwards." You train to race. You don't race in training.
P.S. Hoping this is a she.
