I bought one but it can't really do much in the groin region due to the hip bones getting in the way. I have a tennis ball if that works and my therapist works on it twice a week but I'm wondering what else I can do to speed up recovery.

Your own hands are by far the best. Then a lacrosse ball, 12 inch softball, golf ball, "the stick" or variation of it, PVC pipe instead of foam roller...
I use all of these throughout the year
I hold one part of the knot with my fingers, grab the other side with a pair of pliers, and keep pulling until the knot comes loose.
