Hey guys,
I've been training to break 20 minutes since March when I ran a disappointing 22:15. Before that, I was running lots of slow miles for my first marathon which I eventually dropped out of. Now I've made it my goal to run under 20, increased the mileage, added doubles, and added in quality. I feel a lot fitter and my easy/tempo paces have gotten faster, but I still struggle to nail workouts such as 5-6 x 1k @ 6:25/mi. The pace feels smooth and controlled to me until it doesn't, and I just fizzle out.
Here's what my weeks look like:
Mon: AM 8 easy PM 3 easy
Tue: AM 3-4 tempo (7-7:15) PM 3 easy
Wed: AM 10 easy
Thurs: AM either long intervals (5-6/3-4 x 1k/1200) or short reps (12-16 x 200)
PM 3 easy
Fri: AM 8 easy PM 3 easy
Sat: AM 8 easy PM 3 easy (OR a long run of 12-14 every third week, moderate pace)
Sunday: AM 8 Easy PM 3 easy
60-70 miles per week depending on warm-up and cooldown.
This has been my basic program for the past 6 weeks. I feel healthy and fit and ready to PR but not confident to break 20 minutes. Any advice/criticism for my training? Can I do this?
Thanks
