So the final letter of NBON stands for NATIONALS. If you are going to run a National Championship, do it with the integrity and people needed. A few things I noticed....
1) Girls Steeple....The meet officials DO NOT take care of the set up....Apparently the Athletic Custodians from NC A&T do. I watched as they yelled at the officials for moving the rails and making any changes. So the slow section did not go over the water jump on the first lap. How do they make it even for the fast section??? They do the same thing and have them go around the water jump on the first lap also....only one problem.....THEY DIDN'T TELL A SINGLE PARTICIPANT THEY WERE NOT GOING OVER THE FIRST JUMP. So as the girls come around, they see the rail....know there was a mistake made, and the entire front pack steps inside of the rail to go over the water jump. They are then yelled at to move back out on the track. What a Cluster F**k.
2) The Championship 5k- It was supposed to run girls, then boys (2 sections a piece). They were over an hour behind to start with. The girls slow section goes off without a hitch, the fast section girls spike up and are ready to go. With a lap to go in the first section of girls, the second section was notified that the boys slow section would run next. WTF? The boys were not ready so they were pissed....The girls were ready and were told it'd be another 20 minutes. Coaches were all pissed. Did this help the kids run well? Did it cost the athletes both boys and girls time? Absolutely. It was 60 degrees with 20 mph winds.....Certainly a day where the timing of your warm up needed to be good. Apparently the people at check in made this decision and when the clerk noticed it he decided to roll with it.
3) 4x8's on Saturday. As I was watching on turn two, the kids in the next section were doing accels and strides around the curve counter clock wise as they always do. Keep in mind, the sections running were in lane one, the boys warming up were in lane 6-8. The officials were telling them they were not allowed to run counterclockwise. The problem was they werent telling, they were being downright belligerent towards these kids right before the race that is supposed to be the highlight of their season.
I wonder, were all of these officials in blue shirts certified officials or where they just volunteers. By the way they acted, I'd have to say volunteers. I left Saturday night so I don't know how today went. All in all though, this is very disappointing for a meet of this caliber.
